Hearts of Stone

Dear readers, these two silly creatures have been sitting beside each other for six years now. When I was 14, I thought they were rebels. Now that I am 20, I find them silly. Somewhere around 17, I was convinced they were silent social observers. And maybe they were spying on me! I have a very strange relationship with these two. I often thought about the dynamic of their relationship — husband and wife, friends, lovers, ex-lovers, or maybe just two strangers frank enough to talk. Here’s a poem I wrote interpreting their relationship.

Paul and Lily's Long distance relationship

Sitting next to eachother eternally,
yet each time it's a wonder to stare into the beloved's eyes
or hear her silly voice.
The voice fills his void-
a love, a love like feeling perhaps.

"Every relationship is a long distance one",
he tells her.
She listens and measures the distance
between them.
It was 2911 miles of some unknown unit-
it is indeed a long-distance relationship!

He would say wise things;
She would feel enlightened,
only to get lost in his blinding halo,
losing her light
for some man's ego.
the 2911 miles was the distance between their hearts,
sitting next to eachother,
yet so far.
